3916  Resources / Mass Media / NerdTV by Robert X. Cringely on: February 01, 2006, 11:33:29 PM
NerdTV is a new weekly online TV show from PBS.org technology columnist Robert X. Cringely. NerdTV is essentially Charlie Rose for geeks - a one-hour interview show with a single guest from the world of technology. Guests like Sun Microsystems co-founder Bill Joy or Apple computer inventor Steve Wozniak are household names if your household is nerdy enough, but as historical figures and geniuses in their own right, they have plenty to say to ALL of us. NerdTV is distributed under a Creative Commons license so viewers can legally share the shows with their friends and even edit their own versions. If not THE future of television, NerdTV represents A future of television for niche audiences that have deep interest in certain topics.

Some highlights from the guest list:
Macintosh OS programmer Andy Hertzfeld (9/6/05)
PayPal co-founder Max Levchin (9/13)
Sun Microsystems co-founder Bill Joy (9/20)

3917  Resources / Tools / Nmap 4.0 Released on: February 01, 2006, 09:59:44 AM
January 31, 2006 (4:09 AM PST) -- Insecure.Org is pleased to announce the immediate, free availability of the Nmap Security Scanner version 4.00 from http://www.insecure.org/nmap/.

ABOUT NMAP:
Nmap ("Network Mapper") is an free open source utility for network exploration, administration, and security auditing. It uses IP packets in novel ways to determine which hosts are available online (host discovery), which TCP/UDP ports are open (port scanning), and what applications and services are listening on each port (version detection). It can also identify remote host OS and device types via TCP/IP fingerprinting. Nmap offers flexible target and port specifications, decoy/stealth scanning for firewall and IDS evasion, and highly optimized timing algorithms for fast scanning. Nmap runs on all popular operating systems, including Linux, Windows, Mac OS X, FreeBSD, Solaris, and OpenBSD. Download command-line or graphical versions of Nmap and its documentation from Insecure.Org.

DEFCON is one of the oldest hacker conventions around, and also one of the largest. DEFCON is what you make of it.

There are several resources that will give you an idea of what DEFCON is all about.

DEFCON Press: through the prism of the media
DEFCON Pics: visual evidence, thousands of pictures, some NSFW
DEFCON Groups: Local groups that meet
DEFCON Media archives: Speeches from DC 1 to the present, captured
Google: always a good research starting point

'illwill' gets a room with a view with a completely different set of windows.

Quote
NEW YORK (Reuters) -- A federal judge Friday sentenced a convicted hacker known as "illwill" to two years in prison for selling the code, or software blueprint, for Microsoft Corp.'s closely guarded Windows programs.

William Genovese, Jr., 29, pleaded guilty last year to one count of unlawful distribution of trade secrets for putting Microsoft's source code for its Windows 4.0 and Windows 2000 programs on his Web site and selling it.

The plea agreement called for a sentence ranging from 10 months to 30 months in federal prison.

"I screwed up," Genovese said in court.

But here's the best part of all...

Quote
Microsoft learned February 12, 2004 that portions of the code were released on the Internet. That same day, Genovese offered the source code for sale on his Web site. He received a total of $40 for selling the code to Microsoft investigators.

PS - Plus, posting this will remind me for next year.
3926  EH-Net / Calendar Of Events / DoD Cyber Crime Conf 2006 on: January 22, 2006, 11:04:14 PM
This conference's focus is on all aspects of computer crime: intrusion investigations, cyber crime law, digital forensics, information assurance, as well as the research, development, testing, and evaluation of digital forensic tools. This is a Cyber Crime conference. This is not an Information Assurance conference; you won't hear presentations that you may have heard a year or two ago.

Come hear and discuss new approaches and new perspectives with the current movers and shakers of the field. The goal is to prepare attendees for the new crimes of today and the near future.

The theme for the conference is "Attacking Cyber Crime - The Evolving Professions." As this discipline approaches the future, facing technological demands in a rapidly changing world will be more important than ever before.

Several highly technical articles released in volumes approx 3 times a year. The latest set of articles was just released (Jan '06). The site is described as:

Quote
Uninformed is a technical outlet for research in areas pertaining to security technologies, reverse engineering, and lowlevel programming. The goal, as the name implies, is to act as a medium for informing the uninformed. The research presented here is simply an example of the evolutionary thought that affects all academic and professional disciplines. Uninformed is currently not accepting general submissions at this time.

LONDON, England (AP) -- A Web site that earned an enterprising British student $1 million suffered a crippling attack by ransom-seeking hackers.

Alex Tew, 21, said Wednesday that his Million Dollar Homepage was targeted after he publicized how it had helped him raise money for his university studies.

3930  Ethical Hacking Discussions and Related Certifications / CPTC - Certified Penetration Testing Consultant / Re: any idea when miles2 is launching Certified Pen Testing Expert CPTE exam.. on: January 19, 2006, 04:58:06 PM
I can neither confirm nor deny...

Rumor has it that this will be a practical exam and final details are being hashed out now for release this year (hopefully first half). So this will be similar to SANS GIAC certs where you have 2 levels of certification. Silver is the multiple choice exam usually given by VUE or Prometric and Gold is the practical exam administered by the organization itself.

Stay tuned,
Don
