It's been awhile, but I occasionally lurk in pauldotcom and offsec. It's also interesting to observe channels for programming languages because you can learn some interesting things from the questions/answers being exchanged.

As well as OffSec's channel, I've popped into Hak5's channel a few times:

http://hak5.org/chat

And the Michigan security channel chrisj has mentioned a few times:

irc.freednode.net #misec

I'll have to add pauldotcom's channel to my list :)

If someone had a simple question about GIAC certifications, one could visit #giac on Freenode. It is not a cool place to hang out, but it could be handy.

I've finally gotten around to reading the January Social-Engineer newsletter and saw they had an IRC channel as well:

irc.freenode.net #social-engineer

I hangout on freenode in #misec, #milocksport, and #social-engineer

I think it's a very cool place to hang out, after all, you got: #offsec, #hackingdojo, #backtrack-linux, #exploitdb, #metasploit, #intern0t, and so forth  :) There's a lot of very good professionals hanging out there.

It's a good channel with lots of talking going on, it's definitely not a dead channel  :)

Most people I know use real IRC clients like XChat, mIRC and irssi, a few still use BitchX  :)
