Title: Need Guidance from gurus Post by: manikanth on November 23, 2011, 03:47:48 AM Hi all,
Am Manikanth from Bangalore-India.I was going through the forum for quite some time and amazed to see people giving good guidance and carrier path. Please spare 2 mins to read this and suggest me. I am having currently 5 years of experiance in IT but not any of the technical stuff my daily work is doing prodcut installs(proprietery) and setting up environment for customer.Like java, weblog and some scrap.Since a year am working hard on security to change my domain and recently cleared CEH v7 and ECSA .But frankly speaking i have only thearitical knowledge then practical. But i have all over all concepts . I am having below skills : CCNA,CCNP skills.(including idea about various protocols)-Basics Programming skills (C,c++,java,J2ee,Batch scripting )-Basics can analyze code. Linux-Very Basics. Good idea about most of the security concepts. I had quit my job because am not happy with the work i am doing and want really try hard something challenging like OSCP .If i work hard for 2 months daily 10 hours can i get through this. And is the skills what i have is enough as a pre-requisites? Please let me know am in process of arranging money to register for this cource.I have a week time now to register for this what additional skills i require ?Please guide me.I don't have any one to guide so please your suggestions will be very important to me. -Thanks, Manikanth CEH v7,ECSA/LPT Title: Re: Need Guidance from gurus Post by: hayabusa on November 23, 2011, 08:19:38 AM @manikanth -
I'd say if your description of your current skills is accurate, and you devote yourself to study, as you're planning to, that you should be able to successfully complete the OSCP in that amount of time. I think that as long as you have basic concepts of programming and Linux under your belt, you'll be able to grasp what's needed, and come up to speed quickly enough to succeed. I wish you well, and let us know how you progress! Title: Re: Need Guidance from gurus Post by: manikanth on November 23, 2011, 11:29:07 AM Hayabusa,
Thanks alot for replying.Your reply had given me some hope.I will start this course very shortly. Please let me know is basic sql is sufficient or i need to be master .Thanks in advance. -Regards, Manikanth Title: Re: Need Guidance from gurus Post by: hayabusa on November 23, 2011, 11:36:22 AM Basic SQL should be enough to start with, and get you through. There's enough material in the course to help you along.
Title: Re: Need Guidance from gurus Post by: manikanth on November 23, 2011, 11:57:59 AM Hayabusa,
Thank you so much for your prompt reply.. -Manikanth Title: Re: Need Guidance from gurus Post by: xXxKrisxXx on November 23, 2011, 03:44:15 PM Hello Manikanth,
I'm going to second Hayabusa here in saying if you study enough during the 60 days of lab access, you should be able to get through it. 10 hours a day is a good amount of time to be committing. Your background is great having Networking, Basic Linux and Programming Experience. The theoretical knowledge is OK, you'll gain the practical knowledge in the lab. Knowing about the types of attacks out there versus knowing how to perform the types of attacks is a different scale. Your amount of time and dedication to the lab, and studying will make you prevail - just expect pain along the way. Be sure to be open to purchasing any extra needed lab time! I personally had to go back and purchase an extra 10 or 15 after my initial 60 days in the lab just to make sure I felt up for the challenge. It's a great course and even if you don't walk out of it an OSCP, you'll certainly have a whole lot more knowledge than you had walking in. I hail from the same city, Bangalore. Good to see that people are getting into security field :) You are at the right place (EHnet) for guidance I think other members gave u a good insight into what u need for OSCP. From the syllabus of OSCP it's clear that the course is more about network security than about Web App's security. So your CCNP level skills will come handy and other things u might need will be: Some basic skill in scripting language(Python/Perl/PHP), Able to read(understand) Assembly language code, Linux skills and before you enroll, boot ur BackTrack and try to get comfortable with some important security tools so that when you get on the labs, You can straight away start practicing than wasting valuable time trying to figure out how things work And most importantly, get yourself ready to do lots and lots of research on own, manage your time... and always TRY HARDER ;D I am planning to do OSCP some time around early 2012, so keep posting your progress and I might hassle you about OSCP when I am ready to take up the certification :P Title: Re: Need Guidance from gurus Post by: manikanth on November 24, 2011, 10:33:36 AM Hi Hurtlocker,
Gr8 to meet you here.I have theoretical knowledge/Understanding of ccnp.oming to skill in scripting language(Python/Perl/PHP) absolute zero. ??? Assembly language code-yes can understand done in college days. Linux skills-i have basics boot ur BackTrack and try to get comfortable with some important security tools--Yes have some knonwledege ;D I will be concentrating in all the areas what ever u have mentioned thanks buddy for the information.Started brushing Linux skills today. Be in touch.. -Thanks, manikanth mani.secgeek@gmail.com Title: Re: Need Guidance from gurus Post by: hurtl0cker on November 24, 2011, 12:17:54 PM if you are not into any scripting language try learning Python.. it's easy, elegant and most imp' many security tools like W3AF, Scapy, SET are coded in Python. I think in OSCP you are expected to write your own scripts to automate stuff.
Dive into Python got a free ebook, good source to start with Python. Title: Re: Need Guidance from gurus Post by: manikanth on November 25, 2011, 12:20:14 AM Hurtlocker,
Yes i will start learning python from monday these 2 days am going to brush my unix and basic sql skills. Thanks for your suggestions. -Thanks, Manikanth Title: Re: Need Guidance from gurus Post by: gromic on November 27, 2011, 03:28:33 PM Hi Manikanta,
Next to "dive into python" what hurtl0cker mentioned, two sources for python I found helpful were: 1. A Byte of Python http://www.swaroopch.com/notes/Python (http://www.swaroopch.com/notes/Python) -> basic intro to python 2. Learn Python the hard way http://learnpythonthehardway.org/book/ (http://learnpythonthehardway.org/book/) -> more for a practical basic intro to python -Gromic Title: Re: Need Guidance from gurus Post by: hayabusa on November 27, 2011, 06:30:50 PM @gromic- that second python link is one I'd never seen before. Not only will it help folks learn python, but they also have free books on other popular languages (ie - ruby), so it's a cool resource. Thanks for sharing.
I'll be using those to refresh myself, as you always learn new things from others' coding styles and processes. Title: Re: Need Guidance from gurus Post by: hurtl0cker on November 27, 2011, 08:28:02 PM 'Python for Hackers' I just ran into this videos last week while I was googling for 'Scapy' stuff. Two videos, spanning around 1hr each. The content is awesome, straight to the point.
gets your hands on 'Scapy' too. http://vimeo.com/24408094 Title: Re: Need Guidance from gurus Post by: n3r on November 27, 2011, 11:59:25 PM dive into python is a good book ! You can see the videos of the google class too, it's a good ressource to start Python :

Title: Re: Need Guidance from gurus Post by: manikanth on November 28, 2011, 12:21:23 PM Hayabusa,
Probabily yes ,But where to download this application and submit. Please let me know. -Thanks, Manikanth Title: Re: Need Guidance from gurus Post by: gromic on November 28, 2011, 12:32:15 PM I would assume you will receive an email, for confirmation (maybe in spamfolder?) since you had to give your email address in the pre-registration... but sorry, I haven't applied there (yet).... So, I guess some folks here who have recently applied are of more help then I am...
In the FAQs it also says that you have "only" 24-72 hours for the registration process, but I guess this is not the case with your application... @hayabusa glad you liked the link. -gromic Title: Re: Need Guidance from gurus Post by: hayabusa on November 28, 2011, 02:03:32 PM They should've emailed to you. So as noted by gromic, I'm assuming it went into your spam...
If not, reachout to them, again. Good luck, and if you need any help during your studies, ask away! (and 'try harder') :P Title: Re: Need Guidance from gurus Post by: gromic on November 28, 2011, 03:06:48 PM You might also wanna ask user:24772433.
He seems to have had the same kind of problems when he registered for OSCP. Quote I have recently applied fror pre-registration to take the OSCP online course. I'm anxious to get started but I haven't had a reply as yet. It's been about a week ... I hope the decision pays off for you. I'm not in a position where I could do that, willingly, so hopefully, you're better off than I am. ;D
Good luck, and keep us posted. Title: Re: Need Guidance from gurus Post by: impelse on November 29, 2011, 01:38:59 PM I thought the same, I never leave a job without having another job
Title: Re: Need Guidance from gurus Post by: manikanth on November 30, 2011, 09:59:26 AM Impelse/Hayabusa,
There is a reason for resigning the job because the current job is not related to security at all and it is taking my whole time.I tried some interviews but am failing in some aspects of technical skills,Which can only be gained through some real time pen testing. And luckily in Bangalore am able to find some startups who are into penetration testing. So before approaching them i need to have some stuff in me that practically i could explain them .I have money to survive for 3 more months for all my commitments. So thought to take some risk.Lets see how it goes in worst case if i couldn't clear the exam also i would have gained good amount of knowledge. And today i have registered for the course 2 months duration and i have received confirmation from them and my course is getting started on 4th DEC. I need really you guys help in terms of technical through out my course duration. Thanks once again .. -Regards, MANIKANTH Title: Re: Need Guidance from gurus Post by: impelse on November 30, 2011, 01:32:34 PM Death or life, let's the fight begin and try harder
