What do you know about technology, computers, etc?
I would start by using google and wikipedia. search and read.
Also go to your local library and try to find some books on virus, security, hacking, programming.

how blank of a slate are you? do you know anything about computers, networking, etc?

I liked Hacking for Dummies. There is even a book review of it on the site too.

The library is definitely the way to go.  This way, you don't waste any money investing in books if it isn't for you.

I'm moving this to the Network Pen Testing Board. Take a look at the pinned topics. This should get you going for a while... or bore you to tears. Either way, it will help you figure out what your first steps are.

Hope that helps,
