Title: Hacking and Technology Movies Post by: don on October 28, 2005, 04:51:13 PM This is just a list. This is not Academy Award winning stuff, but if you like computers and tech, this is the list for you.

Enemy of the State (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/redirect?link_code=ur2&camp=1789&tag=thedigitalcon-20&creative=9325&path=http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/6305428115) – Will Smith and Gene Hackman in good techno-paranoia-thriller. Hackers (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/redirect?link_code=ur2&camp=1789&tag=thedigitalcon-20&creative=9325&path=http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/6305047456) – Cheesy but must have on the list. The Net (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/redirect?link_code=ur2&camp=1789&tag=thedigitalcon-20&creative=9325&path=http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00005YUNR) – Sandra Bullock: ‘nuff said. Pirates of Silicon Valley (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/redirect?link_code=ur2&camp=1789&tag=thedigitalcon-20&creative=9325&path=http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0009NSCS0) – Fictional rendition of MS (Gates) vs. Apple (Steve Jobs) in the early days both stealing from Xerox. Sneakers (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/redirect?link_code=ur2&camp=1789&tag=thedigitalcon-20&creative=9325&path=http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00008OE4W) – Old school tiger team and pen testers. Great cast. Track Down (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/redirect?link_code=ur2&camp=1789&tag=thedigitalcon-20&creative=9325&path=http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002L57YQ) – Fictional (and I stress fictional) version of Takedown, Shimomura’s book on himself and Mitnick. Tron (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/redirect?link_code=ur2&camp=1789&tag=thedigitalcon-20&creative=9325&path=http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00005OCMR) – Way ahead of its time video game movie with Jeff Bridges. War Games (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/redirect?link_code=ur2&camp=1789&tag=thedigitalcon-20&creative=9325&path=http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0792838467) (and the ever rumored WarGames II (http://movies.go.com/movies/movie?name=wargames2_2004)) – Classic that started it all with Matthew Broderick. Let us know some of your favorite computer, hacking or just good tech movies. Don't forget to let us know what you think of some of the movies on the list by starting new topics. Title: Re: Hacking and Technology Movies Post by: Kev on July 03, 2008, 10:19:10 PM Usually we see the movie Swordfish pop up in these kinds of lists. The movie is crap but it does try to make the hacker look cool, lol. On the other hand the movie "Score" with Robert De Niro shows hackers in a totally different way. Not really a hacker movie but its worth watching just to see the hacker in his late twenties living in his mother's basement playing Unreal Tournament and then hacking when he gets asked to, all the while screaming at his mother, Ha Ha! Oh and the systems admin thats sells the passwords so that thieves can get in is classic. Worth watching the movie just for that. ;D
Title: Re: Hacking and Technology Movies Post by: jason on July 03, 2008, 10:23:45 PM Score is one of my favorite "stealing things" movies. The hacker kid is hysterical.
Title: Re: Hacking and Technology Movies Post by: Andrew Waite on July 04, 2008, 10:49:39 AM Cheers for the list Don, couple missing from my collection I'll need to take a look at (Sneakers, TrackDown and Tron).
Think I'll pass on discussing the virtues of various films that didn't make the list, can get uglier than the OS holy wars at times ;).... Title: Re: Hacking and Technology Movies Post by: don on July 04, 2008, 10:56:53 AM No prob. Glad to help us all waste time... uh hm learn while being entertained. ;)
As for movies not on the list, by all means... add to it. Start new threads on the movies you know, whether you liked them or not, if they influenced you in any way, etc. Don Title: Re: Hacking and Technology Movies Post by: BillV on July 04, 2008, 08:56:44 PM What about...
Die Hard 4 (Live Free or Die Hard) Perfect Stranger (only seen it once, but I recall there being some computer hacking/related stuff in it) Mission Impossible Is The Net the one where she has some kid (apx. 15 y/o, nerdy, glasses, talks with lisp and has some attraction to her) help her hack into stuff? Or am I thinking of something else? Title: Re: Hacking and Technology Movies Post by: jason on July 05, 2008, 10:35:21 AM Looks like Wargames 2 will supposedly release this month

Title: Re: Hacking and Technology Movies Post by: dalepearson on July 05, 2008, 12:32:32 PM Doesnt look to bad from the trailer.
Title: Re: Hacking and Technology Movies Post by: Kev on July 05, 2008, 12:53:43 PM Wargames 2 does look interesting, but we will have to see if its more about being a great online gamer rather than a great hacker. I hope its the later. I also noticed no one has mentioned the movie Untraceable so far, which is fine by me that no one has, lol!
Title: Re: Hacking and Technology Movies Post by: don on July 05, 2008, 01:38:37 PM It's mentioned in another thread. This was simply one of the first posts on this Board to get the conversation (and other threads) going.

Or am I thinking of something else? Think the Net was a dodgy Sandra Bullock film, she reverse engineered a virus and some shadowy organisation tried to kill her her and/or stole her identity so she couldn't tell anyone. Can anyone confirm? Wargames2 looks good though.... Title: Re: Hacking and Technology Movies Post by: RobMongoose on July 07, 2008, 05:25:20 AM Probably an obvious one that pretty much everyone knows, The Matrix series. Mmm, black shiny Trinity. And the rest of course... :D
Title: Re: Hacking and Technology Movies Post by: sgt_mjc on July 08, 2008, 10:46:31 AM I think you are right Role.....I remember something along those lines. She was in it right after Speed I think.
Title: Re: Hacking and Technology Movies Post by: g00d_4sh on July 08, 2008, 01:26:26 PM The net was... well I won't discuss it much hehe. Not my fav.
Hackers, great campy movie. I loved the 3d 'fly through' of a server. :P And the badguy jumping out of a limo... to ride by on a skateboard.. then jump back in made me crack up to no end. Die hard 4.... I just kept thinking of him from the Apple vs PC commercials. That's all I could think of. Didn't he USE a mac in that movie too? I've noticed that as a trend in a lot of hacker movies, they use a Mac. Even though.... macs are the minority for such an endevor, no offence to those of you who DO use mac. War games.. groovy. Firewall, that was interesting. It was the Harrison Ford one right? Where he used a broken open scanner, connected to an Ipod to 'download' the images of the passcodes from a screen? I don't know if such a hardware hack is easily possible like that, but it was a cool add in I thought. Matrix, gotta love a movie that espouses the psuedo gothy hacker. Especially one with a chick in tight leather who uses nmap and then an actual exploit. CRC32, or sshnuke. Liked Mouse too, he reminded me of my old German roomate. Pervy little guy, but lovable. Swordfish was ok... I like Haley. Title: Re: Hacking and Technology Movies Post by: geekyone on July 08, 2008, 05:16:26 PM I think you see Mac's used in hacker movies because the movie industry is more familiar with them. Since most of the best movie and graphic editing software runs on Mac.
Title: Re: Hacking and Technology Movies Post by: g00d_4sh on July 08, 2008, 06:12:20 PM True. That is about what I figured, I think it is funny though.. since main stream hacker culture is not mac centric... though the newer movies seem to have this feel.

Maybe with some advanced prep work and some serious hardware knowledge, but not the way they showed it in the movie. Title: Re: Hacking and Technology Movies Post by: Ketchup on July 09, 2008, 07:05:57 AM Can't wait til war games 2!
What about these? Real Genius (there is some hacking there) Office Space - I believe that's hacking on a Mac there... Lawnmower Man Also, all the Ocean's XX movies, and the Italian Job have some sort of hacking happening. Some of it is cool. My favorite is the stuff they do in shows like CSI where they connect a usb device and download the entire hard drive in about 15 seconds. I just love watching the progress bar go. If you have ever imaged a hard drive, that's soooo funny.
