Title: Microsoft Hyper-V Now Available
Post by: don on July 03, 2008, 11:10:31 PM
I'd be very interested to hear stories and opinions on the comparison of Hyper-V and VMware (and even other virtualization offerings).

Hyper-V, a key feature of Windows Server 2008, has now released to manufacturing (RTM) and is available for deployment into production environments. A beta of Hyper-V was included with Windows Server 2008 and this update provides the final release.

I saw it in action at a launch event down in Birmingham. it is basically MS VirtualPC on steroids. It has one big requirement though that may catch a few by surprise: it requires a 64-bit OS.

I adderssed the shortcomings found in vpc like no access to USB devices. It is basically a thin layer between the host OS and guest and allows the guest access to the hardware, not a virtualized version like vmware or vpc. OF course that brings new problems for us the security pros. Go fingure one step forward and two back....
