Title: SIM Card Forensics
Post by: BillV on July 02, 2008, 08:16:57 PM
Has anyone had much experience with SIM card forensics? I was looking for a SD USB card reader recently, and stumbled across this one (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820409001), which I purchased. While looking around, I also came across this SIM card data extractor (http://www.brickhousesecurity.com/cellphone-spy-simcardreader.html).

So anyway, slight price difference there. I ended up receiving my card reader today and plugged my SIM card in. I had access to the data using the included software with no problem. Trying to access the data through Windows Explorer just came up with the "no disk" message.

I'm wondering if anyone else has done much here and/or whether you could recommend some other software (non-commercial). I'm curious about being able to recover deleted SMS/text messages (possibly removed phone numbers). No real project or anything, just personal interest. I've googled for other software packages and have come across a few (haven't tried 'em yet), but thought I'd post ahead of time.

Thanks.

BillV

I found the below tools (one is a trial), but had no luck with any of them being able to read the card from my USB device. Looks like I may need some other type of card reader.

Did you try reading it with another OS?

Yup, for a minute. I haven't searched for (or randomly stumbled across) any linux apps for doing so yet. I did try to put it into my laptop with Kubuntu, but no such luck for recognizing it automatically. Planning to try some more tonight.

It looks like Paraben has some pretty nice software that's only $100 ($130 w/card reader)...
SIM Card Seizure (http://www.paraben-forensics.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=25&products_id=289)

Goes against my original plan for something non-commercial, but not bad for the price.

Yes, it works, you can try any PC/SC compatible SIM reader, which is also available from Paraben forensics site for sale, and also there use to be a software called as "SIMCON" which works very well.

Now everything has changed since Guidance software has launched Neutrino suite, which is capable of SIM as well as Handset/PDA forensics,

for some more info, u can also check Mr.Michael Harringtons Blog for SIM card forensics and other details, i have been a regular reader on this too.

Hope this helps.

Thanks
