Title: CEH Lab Setup
Post by: spayre on February 15, 2006, 02:20:25 AM
My friend wants to setup a lab to do CEH training. I was wondering what as to how to prepare the computer lab? What needed to be installed?

Well, you'll need at least two machines for the DMZ to act as a sheepdip and a honeypot. preferably two firewalls, to create the DMZ; two different brand firewalls, so they do different sets of testing packets.
What you build in the internal network, is pretty much up to you.
A third machine to run a proxy server would be nice.

Just a suggestion.

Oyle makes some good suggestions. You may also want to try:

  • A common way of setting up a test environment is to use virtualization. You could use MS Virtual PC or Server, but then you will lack Linux support (at least for the time being). So VMWare is the software of choice.
  • Buy cheap, used laptops to use as workstations for Windows, Linux, Unix, etc.
  • If you really want a true lab with routers and firewalls, search Google and eBay for refurbished equipment. There are also companies out there that specialize in used stuff after corporate upgrades.

Hope this helps,
Don

It would also be nice to read up on URL deobfuscation, just so you're on top of it. It really is pretty cool.

Best website I know of that explains it:

Guess what? They are ALL the same thing!!

OK, maybe you don't need to know it to setup your own internal network lab, but you WILL need to know it for the CEH exam, and it wasn't covered in the class I took.

Good to know....

honestly thats alot of stuff.  if you want a simple lab i would just use a new version of vmware lab that can create team networks.  maybe starting with a windows 2000 SP0 VM and an old linux Vm like redhat6.2 or 7.2
